2011 Annual Meeting

Place: Pond Village Church, Brookfield, Vermont

What: Civil War reenactment of the September, 1862, “War Meeting” and Civil War exhibit. A potluck supper will follow the reenactment and annual meeting.

The Brookfield Historical Society has been participating in the state’s four-year commemoration of the Civil War with an exhibit and related programs. More than 170 men served from Brookfield.

In September of 1862, twenty-eight men enlisted on the same day, and thru our research, we have been able to identify them. This is an interesting and vital part of our town’s history.

The meeting on October 16th is a reenactment of that day and is being held at the church where it took place in 1862. The Civil War exhibit will also be at the church for all to see.

Rally Crowd Supports Floating Bridge Repair

Hippo Celebration

The Brookfield Old Town Hall Market Day on Sunday, Aug. 21 has expanded to include even more activities and fun for all ages, beginning at 1 p.m. At the newly-renovated Hippo Park, “sculptor Jim Sardonis and hippo-lovers from throughout central Vermont gather at 5 p.m. to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the hippo statue that graces the bank of the pond, next to the Floating Bridge.” (For the complete Herald of Randolph Market Day article click HERE.)

Goodwin’s Book on Royalton Raid

Neil Goodwin, author of “We Go As Captives,” the first in-depth book about the Royalton Raid in 1780, the last Indian raid to occur in New England, will speak about his book Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at Brookfield’s Old Town Hall in Pond Village near the Floating Bridge. Ice Cream Social & Civil War Exhibit

The Brookfield Historical Society is hosting the annual Helen Daly and Margaret Stone Ice Cream Social and Civil War exhibit on Sunday, August 16th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Marvin Newton House (headquarters of the Society), located on Ridge Road in Brookfield.

A special exhibit Remembering Those Who Served: Brookfield men in the Civil War identifies more that 175 Brookfield soldiers and sailors. Among those featured are Cassius Peck, a Medal of Honor recipient and Dr. Egbert Allis, Assistant Surgeon, who was lost at sea. His surgeon’s tools are on display. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view a selection photos, letters, diaries, and other materials assembled and interpreted by historian Elinor Gray. Public Invited. Donations accepted.

Latest Ice Out in 8 Year

Ice went out at 12:15 PM, April 27.

That’s the latest in our 8 years of running the contest.

8th Annual Ice-Out Contest

The 8th Annual Ice-Out Contest is in progress. There is still snow on the ground in Brookfield, but it is warming up quick!

Tickets are on sale through March 31st at $5.00 each. Ticket purchasers have the opportunity of guessing when a cement block, attached to an alarm clock, plunges through the ice of Brookfield’s Sunset Lake. The timing apparatus, designed by engineering students in Professor Greg Wight’s mechatronics class at Norwich University, is set on the north side of the Floating Bridge and in a central position on the lake.

Receipts from the ticket sales will be awarded as prize money on the following basis:

25% of prize money for the nearest estimated time to the actual “ice-out”

75% of the receipts will benefit the Brookfield Historical Society
